Castello di Bolgheri
This truly historic estate, which once included Tenuta San Guido and Tenuta dell' Ornellaia, has only recently released their first vintages. Under the guiding hand of Federico Zileri and Alex Dondi the wines are without doubt heading towards the quality of its two cousins at the top of Bolgheri rankings.
With a total production of less than 100 thousand bottles and 2 labels, Castello di Bolgheri and Varvara, the estate is focused on a terroir driven style of wine. The wine maker Alex Dondi believes in freshness, purity, elegance of tannins and fine fruit in the wines. He also takes extreme care in the elevage of his wines, using only French oak. The varieties used are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; also present in the Estate are small parcels of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
