Castellare di Castellina
Castellare di Castellina is one of the finest examples of a traditional wine estate in Chianti. Created in 1968 from the merge of five farms, Castellare is spread over 80 hectares and sits in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, close to the village of Castellina in Chianti.
Castellare’s vineyards total almost 33 hectares and are positioned at an average altitude of 370 meters, on hills of a natural south-east facing amphitheatre. Yields per hectare are very low, far lower than the maximum level allowed by Chianti Classico DOCG rules, and of very high quality.
The combination of good sunlight exposure, water drainage, and a soil mixture of calcareous marls, galestro and a little clay makes Castellare a perfect site for the cultivation of local varietals. The wines reflect true Chianti classicism and tradition and are elegant, well structured and beautifully balanced with an austere character and intensity of flavour which make them suitable for long aging. The estate produces approximately 250.000 bottles a year.
Castellare also has a strong commitment to environmentally sound cultivation and the property has become a refuge for wildlife and many birds, as can be found pictured on the labels.
